Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) is best administered with the use of a pre-packed formula called Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) available in a packet. ORS is a sodium and glucose solution used to treat children with acute diarrhoea. In most parts of the world, these packets of ORS and special drinks for children with diarrhoea are widely available in pharmacies, shops, and health centers. This packet of ORS is to be mixed with the recommended amount of clean water. Although these 'salts' are specially made for the treatment of dehydration, they can also be used to prevent dehydration. The packet is used by doctors and health workers to treat dehydrated children. But it can also be used in the home to prevent dehydration. DIRECTION FOR USE : Dissolve the contents of the packet in the amount of drinking water indicated on the packet, usually 1 litre. If drinking water is not available, or if you are not sure the water is drinkable, boil the water for at least 10 minutes and then let cool. Stir well, and give to the child to drink in a cup or spoon feed.Be careful to mix the right amount of water. If you use too little water, the drink could make the diarrhoea worse. If you use too much water, the drink will be less effective. Do not add liquids such as milk, soup, fruit juice or soft drinks to this ORS solution.
