Understanding sandstorms: precautions to take during sandstorms

Sandstorms are a common and natural occurrence in Qatar and across the Arabian Peninsula. While they may seem sudden and overwhelming, these dusty winds follow specific weather patterns and environmental triggers. Understanding why sandstorms happen and how to respond to them can help you to stay safe and prepared.

Sandstorms, also known as dust storms, occur when strong winds lift large amounts of dust and sand from the ground and carry them into the air.

Do’s During Sandstorms:

  • Stay Indoors: Avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary. Close all windows and doors to prevent dust from entering.
  • Use Air Purifiers & Filters: Run air purifiers or air conditioning systems with clean filters to keep indoor air clean.
  • Wear Protective Gear: If you must go outside, wear a mask (preferably N95) and protective eyewear like goggles to prevent inhaling dust and protect your eyes.
  • Cover Your Nose & Mouth: Use a damp cloth or scarf if you don’t have a mask. This helps filter out dust particles.
  • Drive Carefully: If you're on the road, drive slowly with headlights on, maintain distance, and be alert for low visibility.
  • Stay Hydrated: Sandstorms can be dehydrating. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Monitor Health Symptoms: Pay attention to signs like difficulty breathing, coughing, or eye irritation. Seek medical help if symptoms worsen.
  • Follow Official Alerts: Stay updated through Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) or local news for weather warnings and health advisories.

Don’ts During Sandstorms:

  • Don’t Exercise Outdoors: Avoid physical activity outside. Dust can irritate your lungs and worsen respiratory conditions.
  • Don’t Leave Windows Open in Cars or Homes: It allows dust to settle inside and contaminate air and surfaces.
  • Don’t Ignore Medical Conditions: Asthma or respiratory condition sufferers should keep medication nearby and avoid exposure.
  • Don’t Touch Eyes with Unwashed Hands: Sand and dust can cause irritation or infections.
  • Don’t Ride Bikes or Use Scooters: Visibility and air quality are compromised, making it risky to use two-wheelers.
  • Don’t Panic: Sandstorms are common in Qatar. Stay calm, follow safety protocols, and wait for the storm to pass.
